Born and raised in Spring Grove, Mike attended Richmond-Burton Community High School where he played baseball and basketball. After high school, he went to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where he pitched from 2016 to 2019. In 2018 he was given the honors of All-American and D3 Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year. In 2019 he was named to the All-Midwest Region team as well as first-team all-conference (WIAC) and ranked 17th in the nation with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 7.23. His career NCAA numbers are: 17-8, 2.58 ERA, 178 IP, 186 SO, 38 BB, and held opponents to a .238 batting average. He wrapped up his playing career ranked 5th in program history for walks allowed per nine innings (1.92), 6th in earned run average (2.58), 9th in strikeouts (186), and tied for 9th with 2 complete game shutouts. While in college, he was an instructor for all of the UWW Baseball youth clinics, where they covered hitting, fielding, and pitching for ages 8 to 18. Post-graduation, Mike was the head coach for a 14U team and also worked as the pitching instructor in Elkhorn, WI where he gave private lessons and ran pitching-specific clinics for athletes of all ages.
